Considering the tight access removing the starter looks like a nightmare but once you dive in it's easier than it looks.
(Tools Required)
The battery could probably stay in place but I removed mine to charge it up, as well the airbox without the hose attached might work but I like to involve as much light as I can so I removed the hose
Unlike the 1990 Corolla the 91 has a shifter cable bracket that needs removing to access the starter top bolt
I've heard the starter lower bolt can be removed from under the hood but I decided to lift the car and access it from below, use a long flat blade screwdriver to pop the locking tab on the electrical connection and continue pushing to remove the wire
Reinstalling the starter can be done from above, kneeling on heavy moving blankets placed on top of the engine, position the starter below it's mounting point so it can be reached from above, while kneeling on the engine the starter can be held in position with your left hand while your right is free to get the top bolt started
After removing the copper contacts remove the spring being careful of the ball bearing that sits under the spring, clean the plunger hole and contact areas with a clean rag and compressed air before installing the new parts
I recently discovered that rebuild kits are no longer readily available in my country, so this kit was ordered from ebay, I noticed some of the kits don't include the contact plunger, I highly recommend you buy a kit which includes all the parts shown
When installing the battery cable back onto the starter I found it almost impossible to get a regular nut threaded on by hand, instead I used a 12mm nut with a shoulder, on some of these nuts the shoulder is actually a lock washer, these can be held in place on the socket while using a 12" extension used to install it
