Rider reviews from various websites
Just getting ready to replace my mx71s. Am really impressed with front. I'm putting another one on. 500 miles & no chunking
MX71 still on front. No chunking, but they are almost tearing off.
I finally got a chance to ride with my new 71 front, and i love it, i rode in the moutains, rocky and dry dirt with alot of roots and logs, and it hooked up great on everything and everything worked great, i will be buying another one when this one is done.
I think the 71's work good. Up in norcal, I've been riding them through rocks, loose dirt, and dry clay with good results. They absolutely hook up in dry hard pack.
My 71 front wears like iron and bites good too. After a bunch of rides, it still looks almost brand new. I will buy it again if it ever wears out
I'm now trying the 71 up front, and i like it a lot so far, its looks pretty good still and i have at least 8-10 rides on it, its a very predictable tire. ive used it on the track and in rocky granite az trails.
Put the 71s on front and rear on a KX the rear hooks up great in every thing but mud but thats to be expected The front grips on every thing so if your get in a rut your following it. Both wear great.Only had them on for a bit so see how they last wouldnt touch a maxxis ever again they are junk.
I'm on my 3rd MX71 rear & I've converted a few of my riding buddies. I ride rocks, hard pack, more rocks & sand. It's my favorite rear tire. The side bite is very good, predictable/controllable slides. Wear is similar to a Dunlop 606, no tearing of chunking. I know a few guys running the front & they say they like it, I'll be spooning one on this week.
I just put on a front and rear 71 a couple rides ago. I took it out in the single track hills or north scottsdale area first and it was amazing. Handled well in tight turning, open sand washes, slick rocks, small rocks on hard dirt, silt, regular dirt. I rode for about 6 hours and did notice some wear on the tire all over, but not much rounding of nobs or anything. I was very impressed with the feel and handling. I also ride the tracks out here. I took the bike to the track and it handled well in the loamy soil, hardpack, and mud. The tire slips when you want it to, and grabs hard when you need it to do that. I will buy these again!
I've done 100 miles on the MX71 front & found it comparable to the 739FAJ that I have been running. I want to get a few more rides to be sure, but I believe it is slightly better on hardpack than the 739. When it does slide, it's very predictable, no sudden wash outs.
Did another 80 miles rocky/hard pack/sandride today. The MX71 is my new front tire.
I'm on my 3rd rear & very sold on them for rocky AZ riding
After running the same set of 71's for over 6 months now, the knobs are pretty well rounded over. I'm still going to try and run them for another month or two. Very impressed with the longevity, I've never even approached 6 months of use from any tire before. These also have to be the first tires that haven't chunked on me as well. Usually, the rocks around here totally chunk the knobs before they ever get worn down. I might try the mx51 for the front, but the 71 is my rear tire of choice from now on.
The 51's are a great front tire, but the casings are more supple than the 71's and the knobs definitely chunk off in rocky terrain well before they are worn. I love them for racing off-road, but definitely have a stack of semi-worn fronts missing lot's of knobs.
I am now on my 2nd 71 in the front. lets just say im never switching to anything else. after going through every maxxis tire, every other dunlop tire, a few chin shins, a bridgstone here and there, and some pirellis, the 71 is my favorite for offroad. great tire. I changed the first tire in october last year, I ride about once a week, just had to replace it a few weeks ago. it still looked great too, but performance was dropping, then I ran it flat for about 8 miles and wore out the sidewalls, was never right after that. who knows may have got more time out of it if not, definitely a good tire for a knobby knife.

I've had a lot of experience with 71's racing enduros out here in Texas, I wouldn't run the front in anything other than hard/rock/blue groove. The 71 will kill you in deep sand- the 51 is much better everywhere else with intermediate terrain. The rear on the other hand is a mystery. I find the rear to work very well in wet events that don't have 'clingy/greasy/ clay based deep mud but rather the loamy type. It hooks up like crazy on wet roots and rocks underneath a wet sandy/muddy surface. Don't use it in wet clay though-too many knobs and it gets packed up and is unrideable. In conclusion, the 71 has a more narrow usable range for racing than the 51 IMO. If you only care about a tire that lasts longer, go for it !
After yesterday's ride, I think the mx71 looks promising. Front stills looks almost brand new, the knobs on the back just started to roundover on the edge. Not bad considering the ride consisted of nothing but granite slabs, boulders, and smaller rocks thrown in on top of it all.
