To get the best performance and life out of your standard non "O" ring chain requires good maintenance, simply spraying chainlube onto your chain may quiet it down for awhile and give you peace of mind, but it's not really doing much to prevent wear on the most critical parts, the roller bearings and pins, the only fullproof way of knowing these critical parts are being lubricated is by submerging the chain in oil, I use a mixture of synthetic 5W 30 Motor Oil and synthetic 75W 90 Gear Oil, I am presently running a D.I.D. 520 NZ Professional on my 600cc dirtbike, after every two rides I thoroughly clean the chain dry with a wire brush followed by a 90psi blast of air directed at the roller bearings while spinning the wheel, I then remove the chain from the bike, roll it into a circle and completely submerge it in a pan of oil where it sits overnight, preferably at room temperature, before the next ride the chain is hanged on a hook and allowed to drip, the remaining oil is rubbed off with rags, I spray the chain with a good quality chain wax and the masterlink pins are greased before reinstalling the chain on the bike.
