If you've ever noticed a "soft" less than solid feel when tightening the bolts on your XT's seat there's a reason for it, the nuts imbedded in the seatbase were installed incorrectly at the factory and are barely holding on, in fact recently when I dumped the bike my boot cuff snagged under the side of the seat and pulled the seat right off the bike ! with the bolts/nuts still attached to the bikes frame.
Considering the extensive use of heavy steel components found on the XT 600, like the steel rims, swingarm, suspension linkages etc, it's surprising Yamaha didn't continue the trend when they designed the rear seat mounts by using a simple steel bracket tying the two mounting nuts together and mounting them firmly into the seat base, instead they use two seperate nuts seemingly imbedded into the wrong (thin) side of the seat base which causes them to easily pull out when the bolts are tightened. the following is one method of fixing the problem.
