Pictured below is the damping rod from a Yamaha XT600E.Homemade Damper Rod Removal Tool. 3" Bolt with 24mm - 15/16" head. the head needs to be small enough to allow the socket turning it to fit into the stanchion tube. the threads are peened over to keep the nut from backing off while loosening, you could also weld the nut in place. because the bolt is threaded along it's entire length a pipe spacer was necessary to keep the nut from turning while tightening. If the bolt needs to be slightly larger you can increase the size by capping the bolt head with varying thicknesses of tin or aluminum.

This pipe works great as a seal driver, it's O.D is 48mm. the I.D is 45mm and the length is 36". it can be used as a slide hammer but it's length is long enough to clear most forks if you prefer to tap the end with a hammer.
